Our Story

Bill and Mary Martin’s journey began in 1973 in beautiful Bristol Bay with the vision to create The Royal Coachman Lodge in the Tikchik Lakes of Alaska where nature and comfort coexist harmoniously, and fishing enthusiasts can enjoy all the adventure that Alaska has to offer. In 1998 they celebrated significant milestones both personally and professionally as they marked their 25 years in the remote lodge business. That same year they sold the Royal Coachman Lodge and brought their experience and expertise to a new opportunity on the Alaska Peninsula in the regional hub of Cold Bay, AK.

Bill and Mary recognized the potential in repurposing buildings once owned by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).Their commitment to sustainability and creating a sense of place drove them to undertake this extensive and exciting structure relocation while preserving the history and character of the buildings. These structures, originally built to support aviation in remote regions, were given a new life and purpose.

The Cold Bay Lodge became a gathering place for the traveling public, surrounding communities, outdoor enthusiasts, and those simply looking for a place to stay while employed on the many public projects on the peninsula and Aleutian Islands. Bill and Mary’s dedication to service and hospitality solidified their legacy in the remote lodge business, establishing a model for others in the industry.

In 2024 the successful and thriving business they created passed into the care of another generation. Their daughter Ann, and their grandson Michael want to welcome you to a continuing commitment of service and comfort in this far corner of The Last Frontier and the passion for sharing the angling and wildlife opportunities it provides. Bill (d.2018) and Mary have set an enduring example of innovation and excellence in hospitality that we strive to honor.

Our story is a testament to innovation, resilience, a deep love for the natural world, and the people who travel it.

Cold Bay is unique and we are excited to share all it has to offer!
